Built between 1764 and 1782, São José Fortress reflects colonial struggles over control of the Amazon's entrance. Engineer Henrique Antônio Gallucio's design was built under Portuguese rule by Indigenous people subjected to forced labour and enslaved Africans. It opened on 19 March 1782 and received federal heritage protection from Iphan in 1950.
The four bastions, inner buildings and moat reveal its defensive organisation. Notice the relationship between military geometry and the river, while remembering the workers whose lives are also part of this monument's history. Combine the visit with Parque do Forte, a landscape project from a much later period surrounding the fortress.
